As principal learning space engineer, University Information Technology Services (UITS) at Indiana University, Gary Cummins’ primary role includes designing the technology infrastructure for active learning classrooms. The university’s Mosaic Active Learning Initiative (mosaic.iu.edu) has Gary designing everything from informal learning spaces with a single display to large format touch-enabled video walls. He is able to translate faculty instructional needs, student use, and available technology to create diverse and unique learning spaces. Prior to jumping to higher-ed in 2014, Cummins was Director of Human Interface Design for Sensory Technologies where he was tasked to make the most complex systems easy to use by creating simple User Interfaces. Sensory Technologies provides video conferencing, digital signage, collaborative solutions, and integrated solutions for companies like Eli Lilly, J.P. Morgan, and Lucas Oil. Cummins’s love of AV started at the early age of five. In 1977, his mother brought home a Wonder Wizard Pong Console System. She was amazed that he had it connected and had beaten the first two levels before she had even taken off her coat.
